    University Taster Summer Schools Activities & Trips While we believe in working hard, we equally value having fun. That’s why, alongside your studies, you’ll participate in a range of educational, cultural, and fun activities. Our activities and trips are led by our dedicated Activities & Residential Officers (AROs), who help students connect, bond, and build lifelong friendships. About the Summer Schools Download the Brochure Cambridge Colleges Each day of your summer school, our AROs organise guided visit to 1-2 of Cambridge’s 31 renowned colleges. Each college varies in size, location, and architectural style—ranging from historic to more modern designs—offering a diverse glimpse into the unique character of each college. This experience is invaluable for those considering an application, as it provides a firsthand look at the different colleges, helping you make more informed and personalised decisions about where you might want to study. Evening Activities With the sun setting well past 9pm in summery Cambridge, our AROs lead a variety of active and fun evening activities to keep the excitement going. Enjoy a classic punting trip on the River Cam, or get to know your fellow summer school students better through games of football or croquet on Parker’s Piece. Take part in a thrilling scavenger hunt, or put your detective skills to the test in a Cambridge-themed murder mystery. These engaging activities are designed for everyone to participate, and you’re encouraged to bring your own ideas for even more fun! University Visits Trips to other top universities: UCL, LSE, and Imperial College, allow you to explore the diverse campus environments that the UK has to offer. You will attend admissions talks led by university officers and gain insider insights from student ambassadors who will guide you on campus tours and share their firsthand experiences of student life. These visits provide a unique opportunity to get a feel for each university, ask questions, and broaden your understanding of the academic and social landscapes at some of the UK’s leading universities. London Sightseeing Embark on an exciting day trip to London, where you’ll explore some of the capital’s most iconic landmarks. Guided by our AROs, you’ll wander through historically rich streets, soaking up the vibrant and dynamic atmosphere of this incredible city. If the weather is warm, take a moment to unwind with an ice cream in one of London’s beautiful parks, enjoying a relaxing break amidst the bustling surroundings. This day is all about immersing yourself in the culture, creating unforgettable memories, and experiencing the lively spirit of London with your newfound friends. Outdoor Team-buildings The outdoor team-building adventure day is designed to push you beyond your comfort zone, create unforgettable memories, and foster strong bonds with your fellow students. Begin the day by teaming up to build a buggy and race against other groups in an exhilarating competition. Try coening, and see which team comes out on top—if you manage to stay dry, you might even dare to take the plunge and jump into the river! This action-packed day is filled with excitement, challenges, and opportunities to grow, all while making lasting connections and memories. Formal Graduation At the end of our summer school, we will celebrate your achievements with a special ceremony where you will receive your Certificate of Completion. This will be followed by an unforgettable three-course formal dinner at a Formal Hall where you’ll enjoy a memorable evening dining with our staff and your new friends from around the world, celebrating your hard work and the connections you’ve made.     University Taster Summer Schools 2 weeks: 40 hours of tuition Academic Courses Enrichment Courses Academic Courses 24 hours of tuition All students choose two academic courses. Each course consists of 8 x 1.5 hour lectures = 12 hours Book a Consultation Economics & Finance Dr Collin Constantine This Economics Taster Course provides a foundational introduction to the principles and policies that drive modern economic analysis, focusing on key elements of the economist’s toolkit. Through eight comprehensive lectures, students will explore core topics such as national accounts, business cycles, fiscal and monetary policy, debt dynamics, and the functioning of money and banking systems. The course uses real-world economic problems and policy issues to illustrate key concepts, examining how economic activity is measured, what drives growth, and how income is distributed. Students will learn how economic shocks lead to cycles of boom and bust, and how fiscal and monetary policies can mitigate these fluctuations. International Relations Dr Engy Moussa The International Relations Taster Course delves into the complexities of global politics, exploring the dynamic and ever-changing landscape of world affairs. This course provides an overview of the key concepts, theories, and actors that shape international relations, from states and political regimes to international organisations and non-state actors. Through eight interactive sessions, students will examine the evolution of the contemporary world order, the impact of major historical events, and the role of ideologies in shaping political thought. This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the study of International Relations, equipping students with a deeper understanding of the power structures and forces shaping our global society. Psychology Dr Varum Warrier This Clinical Psychology and Experimental Design course provides an engaging introduction to key topics in mental health and the fundamentals of experimental design. This course mirrors the first-year content of clinical psychology and offers students a unique opportunity to explore current debates and research in the field. Through eight interactive lectures, students will examine the complexities of mental health disorders, the roles of genetic and environmental factors, and the impact of stigma and social determinants. The course also includes practical discussions on experimental design and an exploration of the ethical implications of early diagnosis. This course offers a foundational understanding of clinical psychology, emphasising both theoretical knowledge and real-world applications. Life Sciences Dr Ieva Berzanskyte The Life Sciences Taster Course offers a comprehensive introduction to key concepts at the forefront of modern biology, designed to mirror the first-year university-level content in Life Sciences. Students will explore molecular concepts and systems biology, covering topics from the chemistry of macromolecules and molecular genetics to advanced techniques in molecular analysis and modern discoveries in neuroscience and medicine. Through interactive lectures, discussions, and practical insights into cutting-edge research, students will gain a solid understanding of life at the molecular, cellular, and organismal levels, preparing them for further studies in the biological sciences. Engineering Mr Callum White The Engineering Taster Course offers students an engaging and comprehensive introduction to the diverse field of engineering, mirroring first-year university content. Students will explore various engineering disciplines, including Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Biomedical, and Environmental Engineering. Through lectures, hands-on activities, and problem-solving sessions, students will learn key principles and approaches to tackle real-world challenges. Mathematics Mr Mitchell Chiew This Mathematics Taster Course provides an engaging introduction to first-year university-level linear algebra, as typically taught in leading UK universities. The course covers essential concepts such as matrices, systems of linear equations, linear transformations, eigenvalues, and eigenvectors. Through eight interactive classes, students will explore how matrices represent transformations of physical systems, develop an intuitive understanding of linear algebra, and see how these concepts are applied in fields such as physics, engineering, and applied mathematics. Hear from our advisor About the Scholarships Our Advisors The Honourable John McCallum King’s Privy Council for Canada (PC) John McCallum is a veteran Canada Liberal Party politician and has held several ministerial positions including Minister of National Defence and Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship. During an academic career spanning nearly two decades, he has held roles including Dean of The Faculty of Arts at McGill University and Professor of Economics at the University of Manitoba. He has a PhD degree in Economics from McGill University, a diplôme d'études supérieures from Université de Paris I and a Bachelor degree from the University of Cambridge. His extensive political career , co upled with his academic background, provide a broad perspective which is of great benefit in his role on the Scholarship Advisory Commi t tee. Michael O’Sullivan Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) Michael O’Sullivan is a Governing Body Fellow at Wolfson College, the University of Cambridge. He is a highly experienced senior executive of international education. As the former CEO of Cambridge Assessment International Education, (the world's largest provider of international education qualifications for school-age children), he led the CAIE and played a pivotal role in its global expansion. He was Director of the Cambridge Commonwealth and Overseas Trusts and Director of the British Council in China. He has a MPhil degree in Linguistics from the University of Cambridge and a Bachelor degree in Modern Languages from the University of Oxford. His strong leadership background in management and international education provides a rich experience of great benefit to the Scholarship Advisory Committee. Paul Elliott, Dr Dr. Paul Elliott is Science Admissions Tutor, Director of Studies in Biology and College Assistant Professor at Homerton College, the University of Cambridge, and a Bye-Fellow at Selwyn College. He has extensive experience in student outreach for Homerton College, but also for Sutton Trust and the Teach First Higher Education Access Programme. As an Admissions Tutor, he plays a central role in selecting and interviewing students wanting to study for a Natural Sciences degree at the University of Cambridge. He has a PhD degree in Natural Sciences and a Bachelor degree in Natural Science from the University of Cambridge.
