This summer, the historic Clare College, the University of Cambridge, buzzed with the energy of young minds from around the globe at Cambridge International Academy’s 2024 Summer School.
Participants ranged from high school and university students to professionals seeking a career change, united by a shared ambition to learn and grow. The summer schools offered a range of academic courses, including psychology, economics and life sciences. All courses were taught by Cambridge academics, PhD researchers and scientists.
Among the distinguished students was Canadian Olympian Aiyanna Stiverne, who took a psychology course taught by Dr. Varun Warrier, a specialist in mental health and assistant professor at the University of Cambridge. Aiyanna shared why she enrolled in the psychology course, saying “psychology has always interested me, but I also want to pivot into user experience and user interface, how you market to people, how companies want to approach their customers.”
Aiyanna reflects on the close-knit learning environment, where small class sizes allow for personalised feedback and deep discussions. The hands-on teaching style helped her reconnect with the subject and build confidence in ways she hadn’t anticipated. From exploring mental health to understanding the biological underpinnings of behaviour, Aiyanna discusses how the course delves into complex topics that have reshaped her view of psychology and its relevance today. Matthew, a business major student from the University of Toronto, shares how the Life Sciences course deepened his understanding of cognitive processes, memory, and stem cells—topics closely related to his current internship. This newfound knowledge is directly applicable to his future business-focused projects.
Matthew cherishes his memorable experience of studying in another English speaking country abroad, saying it has opened his eyes to cultural differences and broadened his worldview. He reflects on the value of being immersed in a new environment and how it has contributed to his personal growth with invaluable global perspectives. Hear more about Matthew’s experience here.
In a touching interview, Jennifer reflects on the life-changing experience her daughter had during the summer school.
