Economics & Finance

Dr Collin Constantine

This Economics Taster Course provides a foundational introduction to the principles and policies that drive modern economic analysis, focusing on key elements of the economist’s toolkit. Through eight comprehensive lectures, students will explore core topics such as national accounts, business cycles, fiscal and monetary policy, debt dynamics, and the functioning of money and banking systems. The course uses real-world economic problems and policy issues to illustrate key concepts, examining how economic activity is measured, what drives growth, and how income is distributed. Students will learn how economic shocks lead to cycles of boom and bust, and how fiscal and monetary policies can mitigate these fluctuations.

International Relations

Dr Engy Moussa

The International Relations Taster Course delves into the complexities of global politics, exploring the dynamic and ever-changing landscape of world affairs. This course provides an overview of the key concepts, theories, and actors that shape international relations, from states and political regimes to international organisations and non-state actors. Through eight interactive sessions, students will examine the evolution of the contemporary world order, the impact of major historical events, and the role of ideologies in shaping political thought. This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the study of International Relations, equipping students with a deeper understanding of the power structures and forces shaping our global society.

Psychology

Dr Varum Warrier

This Clinical Psychology and Experimental Design course provides an engaging introduction to key topics in mental health and the fundamentals of experimental design. This course mirrors the first-year content of clinical psychology and offers students a unique opportunity to explore current debates and research in the field. Through eight interactive lectures, students will examine the complexities of mental health disorders, the roles of genetic and environmental factors, and the impact of stigma and social determinants. The course also includes practical discussions on experimental design and an exploration of the ethical implications of early diagnosis. This course offers a foundational understanding of clinical psychology, emphasising both theoretical knowledge and real-world applications.

Life Sciences

Dr Ieva Berzanskyte

The Life Sciences Taster Course offers a comprehensive introduction to key concepts at the forefront of modern biology, designed to mirror the first-year university-level content in Life Sciences. Students will explore molecular concepts and systems biology, covering topics from the chemistry of macromolecules and molecular genetics to advanced techniques in molecular analysis and modern discoveries in neuroscience and medicine. Through interactive lectures, discussions, and practical insights into cutting-edge research, students will gain a solid understanding of life at the molecular, cellular, and organismal levels, preparing them for further studies in the biological sciences.

Engineering

The Engineering Taster Course offers students an engaging and comprehensive introduction to the diverse field of engineering, mirroring first-year university content. Students will explore various engineering disciplines, including Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Biomedical, and Environmental Engineering. Through lectures, hands-on activities, and problem-solving sessions, students will learn key principles and approaches to tackle real-world challenges. The course culminates in a design challenge, where students will apply their knowledge to develop innovative solutions, providing valuable insights into the engineering design process and future directions in the field.

Mathematics

Mr Mitchell Chiew

This Mathematics Taster Course provides an engaging introduction to first-year university-level linear algebra, as typically taught in leading UK universities. The course covers essential concepts such as matrices, systems of linear equations, linear transformations, eigenvalues, and eigenvectors. Through eight interactive classes, students will explore how matrices represent transformations of physical systems, develop an intuitive understanding of linear algebra, and see how these concepts are applied in fields such as physics, engineering, and applied mathematics. The course combines theoretical discussions with practical exercises, equipping students with foundational skills for university studies.
